Online Show Case

Local events expert uses technology to fundraise for special charity in honour of her dad

A Northamptonshire events expert is launching the county’s first Business Online Showcase and has chosen to fundraise for Age UK Northamptonshire, who supported her family when they needed it most.

The exhibition-style networking event is set to take place on Wednesday, 29 July with two sessions: 10:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:00. A £5 entrance fee will apply for participants, all of which is being generously donated to Age UK Northamptonshire.

Kerry Bate, who runs Polka Dot Events, has a special connection to Age UK Northamptonshire. After Kerry’s dad was diagnosed with a stage four brain tumour, he needed around the clock care. The family promised him they would care for him at home, but this put immense pressure on the family, especially Kerry’s mum who became his full-time carer.

When Kerry’s dad became bedbound, the pressure was too much. It was at that point that they enlisted the help of the Age UK Northamptonshire’s Extra Help Team who support people deemed to be in the last eight weeks of life. The team of 28 carers provide daily support to people in their own homes, often visiting up to four times a day.

The charity helped Kerry’s mum look after her dad on a daily basis and twice a week did an overnight stay which allowed Kerry’s mum to catch up on much-needed sleep, safe in the knowledge her husband was being well cared for.

Kerry Bate explains: “Age UK Northamptonshire were amazing. Without their help, the pressure on my mum, at an already heart-breaking time, would have been too much. The support and help we received really was second to none and we are so grateful that it enabled my dad to have a more comfortable end of life.”

The virtual business showcase will not only support the charity but local and national businesses who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. Kerry found a great networking and conference platform which enabled her to design and plan an interactive event bringing businesses from around the UK together into an online space. The showcase will use technology that will enable visitors to take charge of where they go, who they talk to and what they see. Visitors will log in, receive a floorplan and there will be 20 exhibition rooms, two keynote speakers and even a virtual café.

Already lined up to exhibit are a design company, marketing specialist, social media expert and project planning company. More exhibitors are sought (at £40 to sponsor a room) but Kerry is keen to stress that she is seeking a wide range of different businesses, from varying sectors – to guarantee there is something for everyone who attends.

Kerry has also donated an exhibition room to the Age UK Northamptonshire who will benefit from networking with businesses who may not be familiar with the breadth of service that the charity offers.

Chris Duff, Age UK Northamptonshire’s Chief Executive, said “Generous support from local businesses is crucial to enable us to keep supporting 15,000 older people across the county every year. We are grateful and very moved that Kerry chose us and the reasons why. Our Extra Care team are there for families when they need us the most. We’re honoured to be able to help and care for other people’s loved ones as we would our own.”
