Northamptonshire Business Finance Survey finds that two thirds of business leaders say their future happiness is not ‘financial.’

An influential business survey sent to over 100 leading Northamptonshire firms has shown that two out of three business leaders have said their future happiness at work is ‘non-financial.’

The Northamptonshire Business Finance Survey 2020 was commissioned by Cameron Waldron, the Managing Director of New England Financial Solutions based in Northampton Town Centre.

“As the local economy slowly comes out of recession we wanted to ensure that business had the opportunity to share their views on their future direction and that of their teams.” Cameron Waldron said. “We are now sharing that research which has shown us just how much COVID-19 has impacted planning for the future.”

Of those businesses surveyed, just under one half (42%) said their business had been impacted ‘severely’ due to COVID-19 and 56% of their workforce had been placed on some form of furlough.

“It is clear from the data that local firms have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and that with over half of their workforce placed in some sort of furlough there is real and considerable concern about future growth and success.” Cameron Waldron added.

In the online survey an enormous 85% of businesses said that over the next 2 – 3 years the health of their family and time with their family will be the most influential factor impacting their happiness.

Just under three quarters (70%) added that they would like their place of work to offer them opportunities to work from home and increase health benefits such as private health care.

“There is no doubt that while businesses surveyed have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, they are seriously and considerably looking at what happiness really means to them and their workforce.” Cameron said.

“The stereotyped business and business leader is often thought of as being someone that highly values big wages, long hours in the office and a career ahead of all else. What the Northamptonshire Summer Business Finance Survey 2020 has shown us is that money, being away from home and long commutes are not at all what being happy is all about.”

Other results from the Northamptonshire Finance Business Survey (Summer) 2020 include:

  • 28% of staff said their salary level post COVID-19 is the most important thing to them.
  • Over 70% of businesses said they would not return to any type of normality until the middle of 2021.
  • 56% of the workforce identify physical, mental and private health support as a service that they would most prefer to receive from their employer.
